Like its predecessor, Left 4 Dead 2 is a first-person shooter with a heavy emphasis on cooperative gameplay. The game presents five new campaigns, each composed of three to five smaller levels. The player begins the game as a soldier with Task Force Ranger, commanding three team members: Huck, Mother, and Preacher. Nuclear scientist Dr. Otto Octavius attempts to make a fusion power experiment, sponsored by Oscorp, that would provide an unlimited source power to Manhattan.
